Walking post COVID-19

We are looking at walking post Covid-19. During the Covid-19 pandemic we put our programme on hold.  This was a difficult time for us as well as for our wonderful group of walkers, the Nordic Nuts.

I have kept in touch with as many of the group as possible, during this time.  It has been great to hear of some of you getting out walking. I am also aware of those who haven’t had a chance to get out, have been shielding or are key workers and have found it difficult to find the energy to get out and about.

I have contacted our newsletter subscribers and our regular walkers and they were interested in starting the walks again.

We are therefore holding our Getting back to Nordic Walking beach walk on Saturday 27 June 2020 at Cresswell Beach.

Cresswell Beach is ideal for our first walk and will allow us plenty of room to follow the government’s social distancing guidelines

Your safety is paramount to us.  Therefore, I thought it would be a good idea to let you know what to expect, if you are able to join us.

Firstly, there will be a reminder of technique prior to the walk.  Then, dependent on numbers, we will split into two groups (maximum 5 per group).  I will take those who don’t want to walk far (up to 3 miles).  Martin will lead those walkers who would like to walk a bit further (around 5-6 miles).

We will have anti-bacterial gel available and all our poles and gloves have been cleaned for those of you who borrow them.

We do hope you will be able to join us on Saturday or maybe on one of our future walks, as we start to get back to something like normal.

Looking Back on Swainby to Osmotherley – Aug 2018

SwainbyOsmotherley - SwainbyOsmotherley_04082018Mx-3-Website

This is the fourth of our Looking Back posts and this time we will be looking back on Swainby to Osmotherley. A walk that was great mainly because it was a fabulous day, warm and sunny, and the views over North Yorkshire were spectacular.

We had checked out this walk in the autumn of 2017. For some reason we only got one photo of the whole walk. What we did get though was a huge amount of blackberries and some wild raspberries.

This is the third of our Looking Back posts. This time we are looking back at a walk that had ponies and a prize winning photo, Ford Village and Ford Moss.

When we first checked out this walk, we couldn’t find Routin Lynn, the waterfall close to Ford Moss. We weren’t far from it though, as we found when we did the walk this time.

Looking Back on Coldingham and St Abbs – Apr 2018

This is the second of our Looking Back posts. This time we are looking back at another one of our popular walks, Coldingham and St Abbs.

We knew when we checked this walk out that it was a good one. The scenery is not just good but spectacular. This walk is the only one we’ve done that is wholly in Scotland, just. Despite being farther away than the other walks, it is well worth it the journey.

Staying well when social distancing

Coronavirus - SocialDistancing Staying well when social distancing
Social distancing the Strolls With Poles way

Whilst the key workers (including Julie) are all keeping things going, the rest of us will be either self isolating or just staying home and social distancing, like we’re told. Those over 70 and with underlying health conditions have been asked to stay indoors for 12 weeks. This is likely to be challenging, especially for those of us who are used to getting outdoors. The advice to help cope with social distancing appears to be based around 10 steps.

  • Establish a daily routine
  • Balance your weekly routine
  • Think about which regular activities are most important to you
  • Set daily goals
  • Identify the triggers that make you feel low
  • Talk with family, friends and neighbours
  • Take care of yourself
  • Avoid staying still for too long
  • Have a good sleep routine
  • Keep in touch – you can contact us at any time.

How can I do this, I hear you you say. Well we’ve put together a bunch of links to resources that can help. Thanks to Julie’s colleagues who have given us permission to share. See below.

The activity pack especially looks great. I’ve tried the “Cake in a mug” recipe already and it’s not bad. I like chocolate pudding a little sweeter and more chocolatey, so more sugar and cocoa next time. I recommend a very big mug.

If we get any more useful information we’ll add it to the this post.
