Bamburgh and Budle Bay – 23rd Jan 2022

Bamburgh and Budle Bay is a gorgeous walk in one of the less accessible areas of the Northumberland Coast. It has interesting features, history and spectacular views throughout the walk.

Bamburgh Lighthouse and Stag Rock

We started at the north end of Bamburgh Beach and followed the path over the dunes towards the lighthouse. Some of our walkers spotted something on the rocks by the lighthouse. Was it a bench end or a deer? This is Stag Rock. There isn’t much information on its origin, but it is interesting all the same.

The lighthouse adjacent to Stag Rock is unmanned these days and has an electric light now. It’s now what you’d normally think of as a lighthouse. It’s quite a squat little building but it is still a working lighthouse.

Budle Point and Budle Bay

From here we walked a rather muddy path to the main attraction of this walk, the beach and Budle Bay. This beach is not easy to access and, as a result, is relatively empty. Nevertheless, this is one of the best beaches on this coast and at low tide is huge.

Before long we reached Budle Bay and enjoyed the walk along the side of the bay. This is a favourite place for birdwatchers, as many seabirds can be spotted here. The mud flats and sand banks are hard to reach and can be dangerous, so the birds are undisturbed.

Back to Bamburgh

We passed the old jetty and headed for a coffee stop at Kiln Point. From here, we walked up the lane and across the fields back to Heather Cottages. From here we took an easy walk across the dune path and the golf course back to Bamburgh. We did stop off to look at the gun emplacement overlooking the bay.

Arriving at Bamburgh, we took a little walk on the beach and round the back of the castle before heading into the village for refreshments.
