Bolam Lake and Shaftoe Crags

BolamShaftoe - bolam-1

Bolam Lake and Shaftoe Crags is a walk that takes in the beautiful Bolam Lake Country Park and the Shaftoe Crags escarpment.

The Country Park has lakeside, woodland and grass areas, as well as a small café.

Shaftoe Crags has several interesting rock features.  The Punch Bowl rock and Piper’s Chair are two of these features.  On a good day the views to the south and west are spectacular.

The start

BolamShaftoe - BolamShaftoe-1

This year we are doing the walk in the opposite direction.

It starts in the charming Bolam Lake Country Park.  We walk past the lake and then head out of the park, along the road towards the west.

Salters Nick

As we head out west along a bridleway, we pass through Salters Nick. We turn south here and head towards Shaftoe Crags.

Shaftoe Crags

Shaftoe Crags offers spectacular views of the Tyne valley and the surrounding countryside.  The rocks at Shaftoe Crags show some interesting rock art, alongside more modern graffiti that has been carved in to the rock for decades.  We will stop for lunch here, so please bring a picnic.

Return to Bolam Lake

We will return to Bolam Lake, heading south from East Shaftoe Hall and then following paths east to Low House Wood Car Park and beck round the lake to the café.

BolamShaftoe - BolamShaftoe-3

After the walk we will visit the Bolam Lake Visitor Centre’s café or the nearby Blacksmiths.

We hope to see you there.
