Derwent Walk Country Park

DerwentWalk - DerwentWalkDec_01122018-6-Website

The Derwent Walk Country Park is one of our favourite areas for walking and has been for many years, as it is on our doorstep.  It is situated on the outskirts of Gateshead but once you are there, it feels like somewhere far from towns and cities.

We start at the Land of Oak and Iron Heritage Centre.  This is a heritage centre for the region.  It also incorporates Cafe Shrub.  The Land of Oak and Iron is an area surrounding the Derwent Valley.  The Oak refers to the natural woodland in the area and the Iron to its steel making past.

The walk itself is a 6 mile flat walk taking in part of the 11 miles of the Derwent Walk (a disused railway).  As it is a disused railway the gradient is small, making for very easy walking.  Although some of the more interesting places, like Hollinside Manor, are off the main path.

The Derwent Walk Country Park includes woodlands, riverside meadows and the Derwent Walk itself.  It is a beautiful and very varied area, with something for everyone.

This stretch of the Derwent walk is popular with dog walkers and joggers.  It is also part of the C2C cycling route, so we are likely to see a few cyclists.

Starting at the new cafe, Land of Oak and Iron, we will pass some of the many focal points including the Butterfly Bridge, Clockburn Lake and Kite Hill.

If we are lucky, we will see some red kites, which were re-introduced into the Derwent Valley.
