Haydon Bridge, Elrington and Langley
The Haydon Bridge, Elrington and Langley walk is new walk for us. It is a lovely 7 mile walk around the area to the south of the town. We will pass the village of Elrington and visit Langley Smelt Mill Chimney, before heading back into town passing Langley Castle.

The start
We will start in the town of Haydon Bridge just off the A69. There is plenty of street parking. From here we will head up into Gees Wood and then across the fields and into Elrington Wood. We will climb up through this wood towards the village of Elrington.
Elrington
Whilst there isn’t anything of note about Elrington, the woods, lanes and fields around it are very pretty.
We follow a lane through Elrington Wood and into Dinnetly Wood following the Threepwood Burn. We continue along this lane, with views of the hills near Hadrian’s Wall in the distance, until we reach a path that heads up the hill to Branchend. There’s a short stretch of road walking to reach Langley Smelt Mill Chimney.
Langley Smelt Mill Chimney
This chimney was built in 1802 to vent the fumes from the lead smelt mill at Langley. A flue runs all the way from the mill, up the hill, to the chimney.
From here we will head across a field and down towards Langley.
Dismantled Railway
This is the remains of the Hexham to Allendale branch line. It was opened in 1867 and closed in 1950. It was primarily built to service the lead mining industry and the associated settlements.
Back to Haydon Bridge
After passing Langley Castle, we take a byway from Castle Farm to West Lane Ends. From there it is a simple walk along Lane Ends Road, back into Haydon Bridge.
Once back into Haydon Bridge we will visit Oddfellows Coffee for refreshments.
