Description

This is a lovely walk in Ponteland, on the outskirts of Newcastle.  It’s surprising how rural the walk feels, as we pass along a disused railway line, farm tracks and fields.  This walk skirts by the entrance to the Airport and also passes under the approach lights for the runway.

Work on the railway started in 1900 and went into service in 1905.  However, by 1929 buses had taken over and the line ceased carrying passengers.  It continued to be used for freight beyond that. Eventually, the Tyne & Wear Metro took over part of the line and the rest became disused, in the 1980s,
