The start

We will start by parking on the roadside in West Woodburn on the A68 Corbridge to Jedburgh Road.  Please park carefully and considerately.

Along the River Rede

Throughout the walk we will follow the River Rede.  The River Rede is a major tributary of the Tyne.  It is home to salmon, trout and otters and is one of only two rivers in the North East that has freshwater pearl mussels in its waters.

WestWoodburn - WestWoodburnRecce2-47

The walk initially starts on a quiet road before we walk through fields and drop down to the bank of the river.

WestWoodburn - WestWoodburnRecce2-1

On this road we come to Cherry Trees  which was a late 16th century or early 17th century bastle house and has now been converted into a house.

WestWoodburn - WestWoodburnRecce2-59

We come to some stepping stones over the River Rede.  Dependent on the level of the river we may use them.  There is however a path to avoid these stepping stones.

WestWoodburn - WestWoodburnRecce2-9

We walk along the beautiful Lisle Burn and pass an old railway truck in a field.

WestWoodburn - WestWoodburnRecce2-27

Redesdale

We will take the opportunity on the path to Knowlesgate to turn around and look back at the route we have taken from West Woodburn and to admire the amazing view of Redesdale.

WestWoodburn - WestWoodburnRecce-5

Reservoir

After we pass Linnheads House we follow a road down to a small reservoir, we will stop here for lunch.

WestWoodburn - WestWoodburnRecce2-6

The return

We start on the furthest extent of the walk and pass a huge Beech tree.  The ground here is quite wet.  We cross Lisle Burn again by a small footbridge and walk past a small wooded area.

WestWoodburn - WestWoodburnRecce2-10

Railway Bridge

We pass a disused railway bridge and walk alongside the track of an abandoned railway line, the Wannie Line.

WestWoodburn - WestWoodburnRecce2-49

From here we follow a path down East Woodburn and then onto West Woodburn.

Refreshments

Unfortunately there is no tea room in West Woodburn but there is the Bay Horse pub where we will stop for drinks before heading home.

Hope to see you there,
